Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have appointed tennis legend Sania Mirza as the team’s mentor for WPL 2023.
Sania Mirza is the first Indian woman to win six Grand Slams. She played her last major tournament in January at the 2023 Australian Open. Mirza is expected to join the Bangalore team after the conclusion of the ATP Dubai Open, which is likely to be her last professional tournament.Having roped in the services of star players like Smriti Mandhana, Renuka Singh and Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry, Mirza’s inclusion in the squad is a big step from the RCB franchise. Apart from her, RCB also announced the induction of Ben Sauer as the new head coach on Wednesday. Benn is currently the head coach of the New Zealand women’s cricket team and was the assistant coach of the Australian team that won the Women’s World Cup last year.
Mirza, the first Indian woman to win a major title – she finished with six in women’s doubles and mixed doubles – is expected to join the team after the conclusion of the ATP Dubai Open, which is likely to be her last professional tournament. The 36-year-old Mirza announced her retirement from professional tennis ahead of the Australian Open, where she and partner Rohan Bopanna finished runner-up in the mixed doubles.
